On Friday, Dec 26, 2009, an American woman, her husband, and two children were on their way to Rocky Point. They were about 7 miles south of Sonoyta at about 5:30 PM when a black & red SUV started chasing them. The woman got up to about 100 mph. When the road got windy she had to slow down. The SUV was driving along side her, and the occupants were waving guns. They then ran into her car, pushing her off the road forcing her to stop. They told her and her husband to get out of the car, maybe not realizing there were children in the back. The woman managed to get the kids out of their car seats while the men were pointing guns at them. Two Mexican males got into the woman's car and the third stayed in the SUV. They then sped off with the car and families belongings, leaving the husband, wife and two children, one 2 years old and the other 8 months old, on the side of the road to fend for themselves. They were picked up by Americans headed to the border who brought them to the police station in Sonoyta. Another couple with children were at the police station. They had bullet holes in the side of their car from another attempted car jacking, possibly from the same individuals. Both families received a police escort back to Rocky Point. |

| The Mexican government has asked the families to keep these incidents quiet for now while they try to locate and arrest the carjackers. A press conference will be held. This is a very serious matter and it appears there is an on going cover-up by Mexican Authorities (to include the Governor of Sonora and the Mayor of Puerto Penasco) to keep information from reaching news sources in the United States. Phoenix ABC news and Arizona Republic have been notified. We assume there will be coverage pertaining to the car jacking in the next few days. A copy of this report is being sent to the Rocky Point Times. However, it won't be published as it has not been their policy to report negative publicity in or about Rocky Point. The owner of the "subject" vehicle frequents Rocky Point because of invested interests in the area. This is the 3rd vehicle that they have had stolen in the Rocky Point area and none have been recovered. What is the possibility of this being another situation involving law enforcement? |

| The police chief of Rocky Point was critically injured and his bodyguard wounded during a Saturdayn night ambush by gunmen on a major street in the Mexican resort town, according to municipal officials. Chief Erick Landagaray Macias was flown to a Hermosillo hospital after the attack and remained in critical but stable condition Monday morning, said Fausto Soto, director of international relations for the town known in Sonora as Puerto Penasco. Bodyguard Luis Huerta Ibarra reportedly suffered less serious wounds and is expected to fully recover. No arrests have been reported, and no motive has been divulged, although attacks on law enforcement in Mexico are typically linked to narcotics organizations. Rocky Point, on the Gulf of California about 65 miles south of the border at Lukeville, is a haven for Arizonans, many of whom own or rent beachfront houses and condominiums. A municipal news release issued by Mayor Alejandro Zepeda Munro’s office condemned the assassination attempt and assured residents and visitors that “all levels of government are committed to working together in this investigation.” The two men were attacked while driving about 10:55 p.m. Saturday in front of a bakery warehouse on Rio Suchiate Boulevard, an area removed from most hotels and restaurants. Rocky Point News Online, a Mexican news outlet, published a photograph showing the victims’ white pickup truck riddled with bullet holes. The report said Landagaray suffered a half-dozen gunshot wounds. An attorney in his mid-30s, Landagaray became chief about six months after Zepeda was seated as mayor. In May, he told ABC News that corruption within the municipal police force had diminished under the new administration. In other reports that month, he criticized a State Department notice warning Americans about possible fake police roadblocks on Highway 8, the main road to Rocky Point from Arizona. Rosie Glover, publisher of Rocky Point News Online, said she had gotten to know Landagaray since he assumed the town’s top law-enforcement job, and sometimes translated for him during meetings with Americans. “I’ m praying for his speedy recovery,” she added. Glover said tourism in Rocky Point, devastated by the recession and fears of drug violence, had begun to recover in recent months. Now, she said, police convoys cruise the town and business owners fear another downturn. At least two other shootings on Friday also had links to Rocky Point. Mexican news outlets said three Rocky Point residents were murdered Friday in Sonoyta, a Sonoran town just south of Lukeville, while parked at a service station. That same day, two vehicles sped out of Rocky Point in a chase along Highway 8 and wound up in a gunbattle north of town. Police found a bullet-riddled vehicle, but it was unclear whether anyone was killed or wounded. |
